Description

1972 Lightning Bolt by Lopez for Orley 8' 7" (lot of 2 items)

One of the more significant vintage Lightning Bolt surfboards to appear at auction, this early Lopez comes with some very interesting Lopez provenance. Here's an exquisite, top-of-the-line 8' 7" gun that was hand crafted by Gerry Lopez for his friend John "Orly" Hitchcock.

Lopez built this Pipe gun and gifted it to Hitchcock in appreciation for him featuring Gerry and his recently formed Lightning Bolt shop in his 1972 movie, Island Magic. Besides shots of the new Lightning Bolt shop, the movie showed a number of great surfers on Lightning Bolt surfboards.

In addition, Hitchcock used Gerry's image on a Lightning Bolt board for his movie poster. Of course, both Gerry Lopez and his Lightning Bolt label are legendary. Lightning Bolt was the most surfed board by professional surfers in the 70s.

Lopez himself was the consummate tube rider and set the standard for the generations that followed. His relaxed, stylish manner elevated tube riding to new heights. With his fresh approach to riding in the barrel, Lopez became known as "Mr. Pipeline" and went on to win two Pipe Masters titles. His first win came in the same year this board was built in 1972. He followed up with a second win in 1973.

Besides Island Magic, Lopez appeared in about three dozen other surf movies and documentaries. He's also been in a score of Hollywood movies including as the co-star in Conan the Barbarian, the movie that helped launch Arnold Schwarzenegger's career.

This priceless board is in absolutely exquisite condition. It was ridden at Pipeline less than a handful of times before being retired. The leash loop is a glue on so it can be easily removed if one so wishes. The original owner John 'Orley' (Orly) Hitchcock was living in Aspen, Colorado when Lopez made this special board for him. Visible on the stringer Lopez wrote "Lopez for Orley Colorado"

Included in this lot is a DVD of the surf movie John 'Orley' Hitchcock produced in 1972, Island Magic.

Here's a rare opportunity to add to your collection one of the most outstanding, all original Lightning Bolts by Gerry Lopez we've ever seen. The interesting provenance certainly adds to the importance of this wonderful investment quality board.

Lightning Bolt surfboards hand shaped by Gerry Lopez have proven to be solid investments as they continue to increase in value. Lightning Bolts by Lopez that have provenance attached have sold at auction in 2005 and 2007 for $12,000 and $15,000.

This exceptional showpiece, with its history, will be a featured board in the full color hardcover coffee table book, Vintage Surfboards II, available later this year.

Pre-auction estimate: $6,000.-$8,000. No Reserve
(Our estimate may be low here so bid accordingly.)
